Steroids and some medications against cancer and weaken the immune system may allow yeast to multiply. Candida infections of the mouth, called thrush, occur most often in people with diseases such as cancer or AIDS. Diabetics and those who wear dentures and suffer from chronic irritation are also more prone to oral candidiasis. Taking birth control pills increases the risk of developing vaginal candidiasis. Hot weather and tight clothing are also risk factors, since they constitute an ideal environment for candida.
Other factors that promote proliferation of Candida include obesity and pregnancy. The fungus generally infects intertriginous areas, that is to say the places where the skin is in contact with itself. Obese people generally have a greater number of skin folds. They also sweat more, and Candida prefers moist skin. Pregnancy causes temporary obesity and weakens the immune system.
Scholars do not agree on the issue of sexual transmission. Some research indicates that it is very unlikely that an infected woman to a man candidiasis. By cons, it is not uncommon for a man could give his partner candidiasis after being infected. Recent research has revealed the presence of Candida in the sperm of men whose partners suffered from recurrent yeast infections. We must therefore take account of this possibility if a yeast infection recurrence.
