The cheek or midface is typically the first part of the face to begin saggikng as we age. The cheek falls and the loose skin begins to fold over the mouth, creating the nasal labial folds, which tends to give us that constantly-tired looking face.
Full-looking, natural cheeks are developed within the body's cheek fat pad or malar fat pad, which is attached the Zygoma or cheek bone high in the face in our youth. As we age, the cheek fat pad or malar fat pad drops into the middle of the face below the cheek bone.
The cheek fat pad begins to drop while we are in our mid 30's and 40's and can excellerate in our 60's and 70's.
The cheek lift or mid face lift can dramatically improve the sagging and restore that youthful look back to the face. The cheek lift or mid face lift is a relatively simple procedure, only about 1/3 of the surgery required for a full face lift.
The procedure takes about an hour and requires an incision which is mostly in the hairline and not visible. Sometimes the incision needs to be extended down in front of the upper portion of the ear but is well hidden by your hair. Recovery is usually about a week to ten days and bruising is usually minimal.
Restylane, Juvaderm, or Radiesse injected into the nasal labial folds are a camouflage and do not correct the basic problem which is sagging of the cheek. A cheek lift or mid face lift is the corrective procedure. Cheek implants can help to combat a sagging cheek, such as those who have "sunken cheeks' or do not have a well developed cheek bone. However for the most effective solution, the cheek lift or midface lift work best..
