Some people can win for losing.

Tiger Woods, who has yet to finish better than fourth at a professional golf tournament this year, was named to the U.S. Ryder Cup team Tuesday.

Corey Pavin made Woods one of his four captain's picks, even though Tiger's best finishes this season -- and only top-10 finishes -- were ties for fourth in the Masters and U.S. Open.

Well, Woods has won 14 major championships and 71 titles on the PGA Tour, so those must count for something.

Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson and PGA Tour rookie Rickie Fowler also were named to the squad.

Missing from the list was Charley Hoffman, despite his win at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

"There was a lot of thought put into it," said Pavin, who made his announcement at the New York Stock Exchange. "I spoke with all eight [qualified] members of the team as well and got their opinions."

The first eight roster spots were secured by Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Hunter Mahan and Ryder Cup rookies Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, Jeff Overton and Matt Kuchar.

The 38th Ryder Cup will be held Oct. 1-3 at Celtic Manor in Wales.

"It's an honor to be selected," Woods told reporters via telephone. "I've been to Wales for the Walker Cup and look forward to going back."

The USA has not won on foreign soil since 1993.

Woods, 10-13-2 in five appearances in the Ryder Cup, missed the 2008 contest at Valhalla in Louisville, Ky., because of reconstructive knee surgery. Without Woods, the U.S. team defeated Europe, 16 1/2-11 1/2.

Pavin called Woods on Monday night and asked if he would like to be on the team.

"He said, 'Absolutely,' and said, 'Whatever you would like me to do, I will do, just tell me what you would like,' which is exactly what a captain likes to hear from any player on the team," Pavin said.

The Heisman Trophy Trust, giver of the stiff-arm trophy, is giving Reggie Bush another stiff penalty.

The trust is making him the first player in the 75-year history of the college football award to have the trophy taken away.

It's only right.

The running back should not have been allowed to play for Southern Cal.

So will former Texas quarterback Vince Young, who gave Bush stiff competition in 2005 and was the Heisman runner-up that season (and likely would have won the award had it been handed out after the championship game), take the handoff five years later?

Apparently not.

The Heisman Trophy Trust is expected to strip Bush of college football's top honor by the end of September, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Two sources close to the Heisman trust said that, after investigating, it ultimately will concur with the NCAA's determination that Bush was ineligible during his Heisman-winning season in 2005. The NCAA ruled Bush accepted cash, gifts and other benefits in violation of NCAA rules while playing at USC. He was ruled retroactively ineligible for part of the 2004 season and all of 2005.

Bush, now a running back with the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Young, the Tennessee Titans quarterback who finished second to Bush in the Heisman voting, has said he would not want the trust to give him the award.

Texas Longhorns football coach Mack Brown told syndicated radio host Dan Patrick that "if they take it away (from Bush), I think Vince should be awarded the trophy."

But the Heisman Trophy Trust will name no winner for 2005.

No, make that hair to a fortune.

Head & Shoulders took out a $1 milllion insurance policy on Pittsburgh Steelers strong safety Troy Polamalu's long locks, Reuters reported.

The policy, taken out through Lloyd's of London, protects the football player's follicles as a spokesperson for the brand. Polamalu has done television commercials for the Procter & Gamble shampoo company for the past two years.

"They've created the first ever insurance policy to protect his iconic mane for the entire NFL season," Procter & Gamble said.

Polamalu's long, flowing black hair sticks out of his helmet when he plays and extends down his back. He wears it that way as a tribute to his Samoan heritage.

The 29-year-old Polamalu, whose hair extends several inches below his helmet and shoulders, reportedly has not gotten a trim for at least a decade.

While there is no clipping, there's no penalty for gripping, either.

The hair also can be targeted by opposing players.

Then-Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson grabbed Polamalu by the hair and pulled him down for a tackle as Polamalu was returning an interception in a 2006 game. No penalty flag was thrown on the play.

No details were given of exactly what damage to his hair would trigger a claim on the insurance policy.

This is not the first unusual insurance policy for a celebrity.

Lloyd's of London has insured: Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards' fingers, singer Celine Dion's vocal cords, singer Tina Turner's legs and the body of professional wrestler Bret "The Hitman" Hart.

OK! Magazine Reports Swift's Victory as Nearly 1.3 Million Cast Online Votes in Fierce Competition to Determine Bowling History

The public has spoken and country music sensation Taylor Swift is the fan's choice as the 2010 celebrity inductee into the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame. With nearly 1.3 million votes cast online at gobowling.com, Swift topped pop star Justin Bieber in a hotly contested race to forever secure her place in bowling history. Swift and Bieber were among nine celebrity nominees selected by the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America (BPAA) for their public support of the sport of bowling. Placing at a distant third to Swift and Bieber was comic legend and former "King Pin" star Bill Murray who went on a late run to amass nearly 20,000 online votes during National Bowling Week (July 31 to August 7), an impressive total, but not nearly enough to catch Swift or Bieber who each garnered more than 600,000 votes. Rounding out the bottom of the competition was late night talk show host Jimmy Fallon who netted just 623 votes. The results of the Celebrity Hall of Fame vote were first reported in the August 23rdissue of OK! Magazine.

"In many ways Taylor Swift perfectly represents the current face of bowling, especially as the sport enjoys unprecedented growth in popularity among youth, women and young adults," said Steve Johnson, executive director of the BPAA. "While we are grateful to Justin Bieber and all of our candidates for their enthusiasm for our great sport, we are tremendously proud to welcome Ms. Swift as our celebrity inductee into the Hall of Fame and we extend our deepest congratulations to her and the hundreds of thousands of fans who cast votes on her behalf."

For the first time in bowling history, the industry opened the Hall of Fame celebrity induction process to the fans - and the votes rolled in. Since the fan polls opened July 12, nearly 1.3 million votes were cast in a fierce competition that has seen the front-runner position shift multiple times between Swift and Bieber. Additionally, underscoring the global popularity of bowling, the BPAA reported that votes were cast by individuals in all 50 states and across 113 countries.

As released today by the BPAA and OK! Magazine, below are the final vote tallies among the nine Celebrity Hall of Fame nominees:

Taylor Swift......................................................................613,324 votes

Justin Bieber....................................................................608,015 votes

The angst Tiger Woods displayed in the wake of his pratfall last
weekend at the Bridgestone Invitational may be nothing compared to the
unease sweeping over network executives, advertisers and the handful of
sponsors who have stuck with the fallen golf champ.

While ad buyers locked in months ago for this weekend's PGA Championship
at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis., his struggles have produced a
string of ratings bogeys and put the long-term confidence of marketers
and both sides of the advertising fairway into the rough.

How bad has it gotten for Woods? The primary lure for viewers could be the "train wreck" factor.

"Woods is one of the few human brands," said brand and engagement expert
Robert Passikoff, who said the struggles of the nation's most
well-known -- albeit severely tarnished -- sports icon could lift
America's penchant for schadenfreude to new heights. Viewers could tune
in, he said, "just to see him suffer."

That would be fine with the golf-carrying networks, such as CBS, which
has the PGA this weekend, and others, which have seen viewership for
overall Sunday final rounds at major tournaments tumble 6%
season-to-date. That was driven by a much-weaker British Open (down to
2.97 million from 5.55 million) on ESPN, according to Nielsen. (TNT has
the first two rounds of the PGA on Thursday and Friday.)

With Woods licking his wounds and sitting out the first quarter this
year, golf programing on network TV fetched $117 million -- down from
$125.2 million in the same period of 2009 -- according to data from
research firm Kantar Media. As for cable's Golf Channel, SNL Kagan
analyst Derek Baine said he expects ad revenue could end up as much as
20% down this year from last year's $140 million thanks to Woods' woes.

Those numbers haven't deterred this weekend's TV advertisers, which
include ING, Mercedes-Benz, Northwestern Mutual, RBC and Viagra. The
impact, however, might not be felt for some time.

Said Brad Adgate, senior vp research at Horizon Media: "I think most
decisions that advertisers will make about golf and Tiger Woods won't be
made until after this season is over."

Golf's sanctioning body, the PGA Tour, is loathe to discuss the problems
of Woods, particularly on the eve of one of its sport's showcase
tourneys, but it clearly has faced challenges since reports of Woods'
serial infidelity came to light in November.

The Tour must rebuild relationships after losing sponsors for several
tournaments this year, including Verizon, which was the title sponsor of
the annual most-Masters event in Hilton Head, S.C., or UBS, which
decided not to renew its role as sponsor on the Players Championship.

"The going rate had been $8 million to $10 million per year for usually a
minimum of three years," said Patrick Rishe, director of Sportsimpacts
and a sports business professor at Webster University. "But that likely
will continue to fall in light of the aftershocks of the recession and
the declining golf ratings, which are partly attributable to Tiger's
diminished play."

As of this spring, about a quarter of the PGA tournaments in 2011 were
lacking title sponsors, and some say the organization will have a hard
time signing up enough new sponsors, especially for second-tier events
-- at least at previous prices.

"Generally, ratings have gone down since last fall when Tiger's troubles
began, and that has spin-off effects on sponsors," Rishe said.
"Companies are looking for the highest rate of return possible,
especially following the recession and financial crisis. Usually
sponsors don't drop out in the middle of a three-year deal, but at the
end of it they will think hard. Others may want to step in, but only if
sponsorship rates fall."

The long-term effect of a declawed Tiger, however, could be even more significant.

CBS News and Sports president Sean McManus said this week that CBS
"can't control the form of players but always hopes for interesting
story lines and tournaments that get decided on the final hole."

He also expressed some disappointment that CBS has two more years before
its current PGA contract expires given that its value may be hurt. "We
must monitor it closely and factor it in" when contract renewal talks
start, he said about Woods' flame-out. "The value (of the PGA) has been
inflated in recent years because of Tiger."

Woods' off-the-course travails cost him sponsorships with AT&T and
Accenture early on, and Procter & Gamble's Gillette also
de-emphasized him in its marketing this year. P&G CEO Bob McDonald
later said that the company did not need the "distraction" of using
Woods in its campaigns. Others could begin to feel the same way.

"The decision of those advertisers and sponsors not to stick with him
was based on a fear of retribution by consumers who were morally
offended," brand expert Passikoff said. "There may be others who may
consider (similar moves) now that he's not playing very well. Athletics
was what his value was based on, and people are more likely to forgive
athletes who excel."

Meanwhile, Nike and video game firm Electronics Arts are two major
brands that have stuck with Woods, the latter even though market
research firm NPD has said that EA's "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11" didn't
even make it into the top 10 list of best-sellers in June.

"Tiger remains one of the greatest athletes in history, and as a
long-standing partner, he will continue as the face of our award-winning
golf franchise," an EA spokesman told THR.

They were ravin' about her.

Fans flocked to The Mashed Report page of Baltimore Ravens cheerleader Michelle P. and crowed about how terrific she is.

As a result, Michelle soared to victory and has been named Miss Mashed Summer 2010 -- the hot NFL cheerleader of the moment.

After her win, Michelle (in the middle of the above photo) was kind enough to spend some time on the phone with The Mashed Report's Butch Maier, aka The Maier of Hollywood.

THE MAIER OF HOLLYWOOD: Congratulations on being named Miss Mashed Summer 2010.

MICHELLE P.: Thank you so much for the opportunity!

TMOH: What other cheerleading awards have you won?

MICHELLE: I have been competing since I was 4, so I've won different things -- from individual awards to national team titles.

TMOH: Do you want to reveal how long ago you started?

MICHELLE: I've been cheering off and on for 15 years.

TMOH: What were the names of the teams for which you cheered?

MICHELLE: The Maryland Superstars. My mom started that organization. High school all four years in La Plata, Maryland. I was varsity captain and MVP. The Maryland Twisters -- a nationally known All-Star program. An international open team.

TMOH: Have you ever been cut by a cheerleading team?

MICHELLE: No, I have not.

TMOH: What's your other job?

MICHELLE: Project engineer for a large corporation. We do mechanical work, HVAC -- a going-green kind of company. I put a lot of bids together, estimating the jobs, site visits, budget analysis.

TMOH: How often do you get recognized as a Ravens cheerleader when you aren't in uniform?

MICHELLE: It depends on where I am. When I go out in Baltimore with (my teammates), sometimes people notice. I keep my personal life pretty distant.

TMOH: Care to share your marital status?

MICHELLE: I'm as single as they come.

TMOH: How often do fans ask you out?

MICHELLE: They joke around. It's a common joke when you are signing autographs. They ask for your number. One guy said, "Here, let me sign something for you," and he wrote down his number. I keep it nice and distant. We have good fans. They mean well.

TMOH: Have players asked you out?

MICHELLE: No. We never speak to or meet the players. It's a completely professional relationship -- there is no relationship. We'll see them out at events, but we don't interact with them. (Ravens cheerleader coordinator Tina Galdieri says it's one of her rules.)

TMOH: Have you ever been involved on a play on the field? What happened?

MICHELLE: I was there in the corner, when we played the (New England) Patriots in 2007, where (then-Ravens linebacker) Bart Scott picked up the (penalty) flag and threw it in the stands after a controversial play. I'll never forget that.

TMOH: What's your most embarrassing moment as a cheerleader?

MICHELLE: Thankfully, I haven't had anything on game day that was embarrassing.

TMOH: What injuries have you sustained because of cheerleading?

MICHELLE: Broken arms, surgery on one of my elbows. I'm doing light therapy for my back now. Because I get tossed around in the air, it's an ongoing risk you take with this kind of cheerleading. ... The Ravens are the only (NFL) team that has a co-ed stunt team. We have 20 male cheerleaders, so I get tossed up in the air. We do all these gymnastics tricks. Not a lot of people do that. ... I'm really proud to be able to be at this level and do the competitive side of it.

TMOH: What advice would you give to aspiring cheerleaders?

MICHELLE: Definitely stay committed, stay focused and really enjoy how much you can do. You also can learn life lessons from the sport of cheerleading -- loyalty, commitment and trusting your teammates.

They kick. You click and pick.

It's time for you to help choose the next Miss Mashed. This time, it's the women's college soccer player of the moment.

Rather than head to head, they go headshot to headshot.

Here's how it works:

From now until August 31, 2010, your votes will determine who will be named Miss Mashed September 2010.

(Editor's note: She gets the honor but not a trophy. The only prize is the glory.)

You vote for your favorite women's college soccer player simply by Commenting on their page.

There are no costs involved, so Vote for your favorite player(s) by leaving a comment under their bio with "She gets my vote!"

You vote for as many players as you wish, however, you can only cast One Vote Per Player, Per Day.

Negative comments will not be counted. Even if you have a positive comment about one player, a negative comment about another player will eliminate your vote.

Curious about the other nominees but concerned about your player getting outvoted? No worries. Click on all of the pages. Then, find the one player you know or like the best and be sure to add your comment. Remember, you can vote for more than one player.

Do you attend one of these schools and want to help your player win? Tell your friends and fellow fans about the contest. Tell

the kid down the hall in your dorm who has free time in the next month and will remember to vote every day on your favorite player's page.

Is your favorite player or school not represented? Do something about it. Nominate additional players by writing their names and schools in the comment box below. We can't promise you that they will -- or can -- be added, but everyone will be considered. A nominee need not be the best player on a team. A nominee need not even be a starter. The only requirement is that a player be on a college's active roster.

Schools with direct ties to Miss Mashed personnel were ineligible to participate. Each eligible school can have only one player compete.

Of course, if you want to suggest another nominee, you had better hurry. The other players have a head start!

A player gets one bonus vote when you leave a comment under her bio with "She gets my vote!" Negative comments will not be counted. Even if you have a positive comment about one player, a negative comment about another player will eliminate your votes.

Be sure to Tweet & Re-tweet... Share on Facebook or whatever your social network of choice may be. Get the word out and support your favorite player.

The player with the most votes at the end of August will be named Miss Mashed September 2010 and will be featured in an in-depth Q&A in September.

Without further ado, our nominees, in alphabetical order by school, are ...
